Frequently asked questions
According to Florida Law, your portfolio should contain:
- A log of educational activities: Although many people include them, it is not necessary to include specific dates. Examples can be a lesson plan book, diary-style entries, photos, calendar with notes, checked-off table of contents pages to show what was done, score reports, blogs, social media feeds & event lists
- A list of reading materials – Book titles only are ok, authors’ names, page numbers, book reports, etc., are not required. Reading materials can include books read by the child, textbooks/workbooks, books read to the child, websites used by the child – pretty much anything that is read. Library receipts work great!
- Work Samples – Samples and/or photos of actual work completed by the student, preferably from the beginning, middle, and end of the year so that progress is easily seen. Including only “perfect” samples is not necessarily a good idea, as it is easier to see progress when mistakes are shown and then corrected.
- You can review the state law here: Florida Department of Education - Home Education Requirements
The portfolio review is not meant to be a quiz or a test. A brief discussion with your child should occur. Your child can be as involved in the process as they feel comfortable. Be sure to let me know if your child has an IEP or is non-verbal. I believe it is great for a child to know how their education is progressing and I will have a conversation with them about the strengths I see.
